The controversial videos showed Camen allegedly wearing blackface and using racist language. People also discovered a separate video where the voice actor sports a wig while making transphobic jokes. Immediately after the discovery of the offensive materials, Camen was quick to delete the videos from his YouTube channel and has since issued an apology to the community.
Camen tried to explain that the videos were meant to be an “edgy” type of comedy and that he never portrayed himself in blackface, given that he was merely wearing a multicolored mask. The controversy drew attention after a ResetEra user named Skittles commented on the fact that while Morrison is the only person of color in Devil May Cry 5, he is voiced by a white actor who posted racist videos on YouTube. In talking to Eurogamer, Camen said:
The videos posted in Camen’s YouTube channel were regularly uploaded during a year-long period between 2016 and 2017. In Camen’s own description of his channel, it is stated that it is a place for “outrageous comedy characters”. Although Capcom is still yet to give its official statement regarding the controversy, a spokesperson from the Devil May Cry 5 developer explained that the views expressed by Camen do not reflect Capcom’s in any way.
A couple of weeks ago, Devil May Cry 5 also found itself in controversy when it was discovered that the PlayStation version of censored a scene in certain regions. Several players wondered why the Western PS4 version is the only platform that was censored when the game’s counterparts on other platforms showed brief nudity. As of the moment, neither Capcom nor Sony have commented regarding the issue.
