The Deus Ex: Mankind Divided launch trailer was released earlier this morning, a one and a half minute long video focusing on the game’s themes and intensity rather than just gameplay. Those themes are, of course, heavily political in nature, with a sci-fi lens placed over issues that are ever-present within the real world. The intensity comes from how Adam Jensen deals with thematic issues, which provides those with ample opportunities to either embrace violence or pacifism. That’s a lot to sum up in less than two minutes, but Eidos Montreal manages it rather well, especially when relying on Adam Jensen’s voice-over narration to deliver lines like:

The above dialogue may be a little on-the-nose, but it’s endlessly better than the marketing taglines that have been pitched for the game over the past few months. Of course, it’s only good as long as it’s done in Jensen’s sultry growls.

The other side of the trailer is the intense action which is pervasive throughout. Oddly, where Deus Ex: Human Revolution focused on Jensen’s choices in battle, Mankind Divided seems almost entirely focused on Jensen stabbing and shooting his way through problems. The launch trailer really shows it, with Jensen’s armament on full display throughout the second half of the trailer. To be fair, though, if Jensen’s going to single-handedly end the “mechanical apartheid,” he’s going to need all those augmentations and more.

Altogether, the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided launch trailer won’t surprise anyone who has been watching the game, but hopefully it will grab the attention of those who may have forgotten the game will soon be available. Perhaps the biggest release of the summer, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided should be garnering everyone’s attention until the barrage of fall titles arrives, at least.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is scheduled to launch on August 23 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
