It sounds like what Smith was referring to was the newly identified Milestone tab in the menu that will be available in Destiny 2. According to IGN, who went hands on with the game, Milestones track the main activities in the game, helping to direct players to what is available to play and what level of rewards they will get out of them.
Project Lead Mark Noseworthy describes Milestones as a prioritized checklist in-game that is available at any time:
In addition to giving players a clear view of what they can do next in the game, it also provides a stronger path to progression. If the system works right, it should give players a path showing them where to go get a Legendary drop or to raise their Light higher.
Milestones perfectly shows what Smith says has been a driving principle in designing Destiny 2, which the development team has called “unhiding the fun.” That is, making it simpler to know what to do in the game, in what order, for which rewards. Whereas Destiny 1 could be a confusing place, especially for new players, Milestones looks to be trying to alleviate that potential disorientation when facing myriad activities to do in the game.
Destiny 2 launches September 6 on PS4 and Xbox One, and October 24 on PC.
